What is Acupuncture and what can I expect from a session?
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to promote health and alleviate various medical conditions. Dating back thousands of years, acupuncture is based on the concept of balancing the flow of vital energy, or “Qi,” within the body’s meridians or energy pathways. Practitioners believe that disruptions or imbalances in this energy flow can lead to illness or pain which can be treated using acupuncture.
During an acupuncture session, a trained practitioner carefully inserts sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, chosen based on the individual’s symptoms and health concerns. The needles are typically left in place for around 20-30 minutes, stimulating the points and facilitating the body’s natural healing processes. Acupuncture is considered safe when performed by a qualified practitioner, as the needles are very fine and designed to cause minimal discomfort upon insertion.
At our clinic, while resting with needles, patients will receive 30 minutes of infrared treatment on our amethyst Biomat(link), typically followed by bodywork, essential oils or liniments when indicated. Many people experience a deep sense of relaxation during and after an acupuncture session. This calming effect may be due to the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, and the reduction of stress hormones. Resolving health concerns or symptoms can happen within a short time or can take up to several months to show significant improvement, but in general after a few sessions, there is noticeable change for the better.
