Since becoming a licensed Acupuncturist, helping women achieve pregnancy has been both a passion and a large part of my practice. I have spent more hours of my continuing education focused on women’s health and fertility than any other topic. This led me to becoming a fellow with The Acupuncture and TCM Board of Reproductive Medicine (ABORM). There is nothing more gratifying than working with women from when they are trying to conceive, through conception, pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.
There is so much that Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can do to support this special journey and no matter where you are in the process of planning your family, Fertility Acupuncture can help.
Before starting acupuncture for fertility, we will do a thorough assessment of your overall health, medical history, and specific fertility concerns. This may include information about menstrual cycles, hormone levels, lifestyle factors, and any underlying health conditions. This will help us guide our therapy from a Chinese medical perspective. We also work with many types of providers including OBGYN’s, Naturopathic Doctors, and Reproductive Endocrinologists and are well versed in both eastern and western medical fertility protocols.
Some ways that acupuncture can help to improve fertility in women:
Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Acupuncture is believed to have a calming effect on the nervous system. Stress reduction is significant in fertility, as high stress levels may negatively impact reproductive function by affecting sex hormones.
Regulation of Menstrual Cycle: Acupuncture can help regulate menstrual cycles and balance hormonal levels, which can be crucial for fertility.
Supporting Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART): Acupuncture is often used as a complementary therapy for individuals undergoing assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI). Numerous studies indicate that acupuncture can lead to higher birth rates for those using IVF.
When trying to conceive, weekly acupuncture sessions are typically recommended. Many women are able to conceive within 3-4 months of just using acupuncture, dietary therapy and/or Chinese herbs. When undergoing IVF, our recommendation is to come twice weekly for 5 weeks prior to egg retrieval and within 12-24 hours prior to embryo transfer.
